Manchester United launch investigation into Old Trafford fiasco after Galatasaray defeat

Manchester United are investigating how at least 1,000 tickets in the home end of their Champions League clash against Galatasaray fell into the hands of visiting supporters.

The jubilant celebrations at the final whistle, once United fans had left, revealed just how many Galatasaray fans had managed to get into the home end for their side's famous 3-2 win at Old Trafford.

A large group of fans were seated together in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, while hundreds more in the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand flocked towards the away end to join in with the celebrations.

There were also a significant number of Galatasaray fans in the upper tier of the Scoreboard End and some of them took down a section of the banner dedicated to Sir Matt Busby that hangs over that tier, reading “It's glory and honour,” the great man he said. “There's nothing on earth like being a Red.”

United are launching a full investigation to establish how tickets for the home end fell into the hands of away supporters, but initial indications are that the majority came either via ticket touts or through official channels, with UK-based Galatasaray fans able to buy tickets for the home sections.

Those supporters could have bought an official membership to enable them to buy tickets in the home end, or even purchased a hospitality package for the game.

Club sources said that measures are in place for every European game to 'minimise the risk of infiltration by away fans into home areas, including a prohibition on ticket sales to anyone with a Turkish address'.
