European Super League court case update issued as Manchester United and Man City watch on

A new hearing for the European Super League case is set to take place in Madrid on March 14.

Last month, the European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA and FIFA's rules blocking the Super League were against EU law. The Spanish court can now apply this ruling when it meets in less than two months. A decision in favour of the Super League is expected, but it may be more symbolic than significant.

UEFA updated its rules in 2022 and insists they comply with EU law. However, Super League promoters A22 might find it hard to create a new competition under these rules.

The European Court of Justice said sports federations' rules need to be "transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate". But Super League supporters still see the 2022 rules as unfair.

A22's top boss Bernd Reichart announced last month that a decision by the ECJ had ended UEFA's "monopoly" on football, declaring the sport now being "free". Despite this, clubs have publicly shown support for existing UEFA competitions, but it seems that the ECJ ruling could give clubs more power when dealing with UEFA. A22 chose not to comment while attempts to contact UEFA for a response are underway.

Last month, City made their stance on competing in the competition clear. In a statement, the club said: "Manchester City Football Club confirmed in 2021 that it had formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League," the club said.
