Erik ten Hag must avoid repeating 'criminal' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mistake at Manchester United

Few would have expected goalkeepers to be such a hot topic among the Manchester United hierarchy this summer, with the position between the posts handing Erik ten Hag endless headaches.

Jack Butland's exit upon the end of his loan deal was a simple one, but the departure of David De Gea was dragged out and became a circus. The 32-year-old confirmed he wouldn't return eight days after his contract expired, and reports in the aftermath suggested an agreement had even been reached only for United to backtrack - claims the club have since denied.

Andre Onana finally came through the door earlier this month after a £47.72million deal was struck with Inter Milan, following several weeks of extensive talks between the two clubs. That period of limbo left Ten Hag with a dilemma as the Dutchman fought off interest for his only two senior shot-stoppers, Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton.

The latter looks set to stay at Old Trafford for at least another season, having seen a potential move to Luton knocked back. Henderson's situation is different, however, and United are open to selling the 26-year-old who remains convinced he will join Nottingham Forest permanently.

Henderson was already packing up his stuff and heading down the A50 by the time Ten Hag arrived last summer, having grown frustrated at his demotion to the bench in the previous season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian manager had informed him a promotion to No.1 was on the horizon, and it looked to be true going into the new season.
