Harry Maguire has already told Erik ten Hag he'll do what he asked amid failed Man United exit

Harry Maguire has already made clear his desire to "keep fighting" for his place at Manchester United after his move to West Ham fell through.

United had accepted a £30million bid from the Hammers, but a delay in finalising the deal has seemingly forced David Moyes to look elsewhere. Maguire is believed to have wanted a pay-off nearing £10m to leave the club.

Erik ten Hag was not actively pursuing the sale of Maguire this summer and has consistently reiterated that he is happy to keep the 30-year-old on board. However, he has also not hidden from the fact that the England international is way down the pecking order at centre-back.

"For Harry, he has to fight for his place," Ten Hag said last week. "He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back, he is the best for England so why shouldn't he be the best for us?

"But he has to prove it. When he is not confident enough to go with that fight then he has to go, he has to make the decision. But I am happy with him."

Ten Hag will now likely have Maguire on board for the new campaign and will need his defender to be ready when called upon. United progressed to the latter stages of every competition last season and even the fifth-choice centre-back will get plenty of minutes.

Maguire has remained consistent in his attitude throughout the season, insisting he will fight for his place in the starting line-up.
