Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag makes admission on Andre Onana's style

Erik ten Hag admits new Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will have to curb his proactive nature at times.

Onana acquitted himself competently on his debut in the 1-0 Premier League win against Wolves until he clattered into substitute Sasa Kalajdzic in the 96th minute.

Wolves were inexplicably denied a penalty and their manager Gary O'Neil received an apology from referees' chief Jon Moss shortly after full-time. Referee Simon Hooper and VAR Michael Salisbury have been dropped for this weekend's round of matches.

United released David de Gea last month and brought in Onana from Inter Milan in a deal rising to £47.2million. The 27-year-old played under Ten Hag at Ajax and while Ten Hag wants a proactive 'keeper, he acknowledges Onana will have to occasionally adopt a passive presence.

"I think he is very proactive, that is what we want," Ten Hag said. "We want proactive players. But of course, he has to manage himself as well, when to be proactive and when to be passive.

"But I will encourage, I like it. Players who are proactive and on the front foot, they are the type of players we need."

United flew to Norway, Scotland, the United States and the Republic of Ireland for seven matches during their pre-season. United surprisingly started their tour of the States on the East Coast before flying to California and the first team's second game in Houston required a six-hour round-trip from San Diego.

Ten Hag conceded some players were fatigued after a packed pre-season but stressed it was an accumulation of the calendar's schedule. The United manager also voiced his reservations about the new edict for officials to add on more injury time.
