Erik ten Hag lists Bruno Fernandes' three biggest strengths as Manchester United captain

Erik ten Hag has detailed the three key strengths behind his new Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes was announced as United's captain over the summer, following the removal of Harry Maguire from the role. The Portuguese midfielder often donned the armband last season and has since undertaken it on a permanent basis.

United have endured a dismal start to the new season, with Wednesday's 4-3 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich their third in a row. Fernandes has failed to find top form as part of an underwhelming opening period but Ten Hag was full of praise for his captain.

“The value of the person was the authority," Ten Hag told TNT Sports of Fernandes. "Second you look for someone who gives inspiration. And can lead by example, also one who is able to scan situations on the pitch.

“Bruno gives us a lot, always. [He is] an example on the pitch giving the energy, communicating. So there's many skills to be the right captain and I think he shows it.

“His main skills are his energy, his defence transition is great, and also his final pass is very good. So three hugely-rated skills he has, besides others as well.”

Fernandes was one of several United players to start brilliantly at the Allianz Arena in midweek, stepping onto and frustrating Joshua Kimmich while finding success in possession. However, two goals in four minutes allowed Bayern to get a grip on the game and despite fighting back in spells, Ten Hag's side lacked consistent quality.
