Elden Ring: How to beat Godfrey, First Elden Lord

Elden Ring has several bosses throughout its world but there are only 12 that you need to beat to reach the credits, including Godfrey, First Elden Lord.

Godfrey has a Great Rune that your Tarnished character needs to collect to have any chance of getting to the ending of the game.

Godfrey is found in Leyndell, Royal Capital, and you need to get by him in order to keep the story going.

The first thing to say here is that you’ll need an immensely levelled character before you head into this battle.

We’d recommend hitting a level of around 80 before seeking Godfrey out; anything below 70 and you’re going to be chewed up and spat back out.

Beating him will land you 80,000 runes, while he will also drop a Talisman Pouch, allowing you to equip another talisman on your character.

As we’ve alluded to, this is a late-game boss and we’re confident that you will have beaten a variety of foes and levelled up along the way before swinging swords with Godfrey.

Godfrey is basically a ghost and he has an immense axe that he will swing at you, with the ability to hit you with some huge damage.

Indeed, this isn’t the final form of Godfrey, but this is a story-focused battle, and you’ll need to bring a heavy weapon into the fight, ideally with bleed damage.

That will slowly chip away at Godfrey’s health, and he’s susceptible to bleed damage, although he is resistant to Scarlet Rot.

Ideally, you’ll find yourself a weapon that is specifically designed to be infused with bleed to maximise your chances of doing the most damage.

Godfrey is a big dude but he is lithe and moves quickly. We’d recommend trying to time your dodges so they happen as late as possible, which may seem like a counterintuitive strategy, but it really works if you can
