Eddie Howe tipped to target Calvert-Lewin as twin reasons put forward for Newcastle pursuit

Journalist Dean Jones is confident Newcastle United will bid for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they want to recruit experienced British players.

The Magpies superb second half of the season saw them shoot up the table and away from any threat of relegation. Tipped as certainties to go down under Steve Bruce, the arrival of Eddie Howe in the dugout helped turn things around. His winter recruitment made a difference while the existing squad upped their level.

With just Sunday’s season finale against Burnley to come, the Tynesiders sit 12th in the table, with 46 points to their name. And victory over the Clarets at Turf Moor could see them secure a top-10 finish.

Howe has been tipped to bring in a number of new faces during the summer transfer window. The Saudi-backed takeover means the former Bournemouth chief will have funds to spend.

However, he has already made it clear that he will not throw cash around willy-nilly and will target the right players. The north-east outfit look set to recruit a new striker.

They have been linked with a move for Calvert-Lewin. And Jones feels it makes sense and fits in with the Magpies transfer strategy.

“It’s an ideal one for them to look at. Calvert-Lewin’s somebody they like,” he told GiveMeSport. “They want to have a British core to them if they possibly can; they want to have players that have got Premier League pedigree.”

It was recently suggested that the man with four England goals will be allowed to leave Merseyside this summer. But Newcastle will not be the only club looking to lure him away from Goodison Park in the off-season.
