Newcastle: Eddie Howe 'sees something' in £35m star at St James' Park

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe “sees something” in Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings, says transfer insider Dean Jones.

The England international has been linked with a move to St James’ Park, and while Jones is not completely convinced by him and has suggested that he is a level below Sven Botman, he thinks Howe remains an admirer.

Towards the end of May, the Daily Mirror reported that Mings is a £35m target for Newcastle this summer.

Mings is, of course, a player Howe knows well after the 44-year-old brought him to Bournemouth back in 2015 when he was still in charge of the Cherries.

The former Ipswich Town man’s future at Villa looks far from certain, with Football Insider reporting in April that Steven Gerrard was looking to replace him. Since then, the Midlands club have signed Diego Carlos from Sevilla, which could pave the way for Mings to join Newcastle.

As well as the Villa captain, the Magpies are also interested in Lillestar Botman, who they tried to sign in January.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: “Maybe Eddie Howe sees something in Tyrone Mings that most of the country can’t right now. Maybe he believes that a change of environment, a change of team, is exactly what he needs and that he can get the best out of him.

“So if he can, fair play, but he doesn’t seem like the guy that’s going to turn things around. And certainly if you’re comparing him to Sven Botman, you’re looking at a very different level of player.”
