Dumfries boxing club punches above its weight at awards ceremony

A Dumfries boxing club has punched above its weight at a national awards ceremony.

The JATV Scottish Boxing Awards was held on Friday, July 28 at the Marriot Hotel in Glasgow with Doonhamers ABC taking home three prestigious accolades.

Hosted by MC Craig Stephens, there were 30 awards handed out on the evening ranging from schools, junior and youth to senior age groups, male and female.

Anne Armstrong won Olympic Style Boxing Coach of The Year for 2023 before the club won the Community Champion Award for the year.

The third and final prize was The People’s Choice Award for male and female young boxers. The club’s Blossom Weir came back to Dumfries as this year’s winner.

Head coach Anne Armstrong said: “It’s a massive success for our amateur club at this year’s awards.

“To win not one, but three, awards is just amazing for our club and local town. The award categories had more than 26,000 votes this year, which smashed last years total of 17,000.

“Personally for myself to win coach of the year as a female coach was the best feeling on awards night. 20 years later I finally got some recognition for all the years I have dedicated my time to this sport.

“The community champion award was another great achievement for my club and my Armstrong Angel Trust. The trust only exists because of the Doonhamers Boxing Club.

“Proud is the only thing I have to say, just proud.

“What a year for my boxing club.”
