Dover Athletic 4 Enfield Town 1 match report: Two-goal Alfie Matthews, Harrison Sodje and substitute Ruben Soares-Junior help National League South Whites end their 11-game winless run against nine-man visitors
Three quickfire second-half goals helped Dover end their 11-game winless run as they saw off nine-man Enfield at home on Saturday.
The visitors had held a half-time advantage, with Billy Leonard scoring in the opening 45 minutes, despite Enfield having skipper Adam Thompson dismissed.
But strikes between the 68th minute and 79th minute through two-goal midfielder Alfie Matthews and defender Harrison Sodje turned the game on its head as the away team also had substitute Ruaridh Donaldson red-carded.
Fit-again Whites top scorer Ruben Soares-Junior rounded things off as the National League South encounter finished 4-1 to the home side at Crabble.
Dover previously hadn’t won in the league in 10 fixtures since their 2-1 victory at Farnborough on September 6.
The hosts had gone close in the fifth minute when a left-footed effort by Matthews from a Luke Baptiste lay-off clipped against keeper Rhys Forster’s crossbar.
Three minutes later, teenage Enfield forward Oliver Davis tried to make the most of a Forster throw out from the back, flashing his strike inches wide of Mitch Walker’s right-hand post.
Whites again should have broken the deadlock as defender Jalen Jones spooned over a Matthews left-wing cross from a matter of yards out after a short-corner routine on 13 minutes.
But the away team drew first blood at Crabble. Matthews was unsuccessful in his attempts to win a free-kick in midfield and Cian Dillon squared the ball to Leonard, who drilled past Walker.
The home side were handed a first huge boost, however, with visiting captain Thompson sent off.
Thompson had blatantly hauled Rolando Onu to ground after an Enfield man had poked the ball past keeper Forster, which left referee Tolu Sangowawa with little choice.
