'Disgraceful!' - Man United fans fume as Liverpool anthem played at Old Trafford for Euro 2022 opener

Manchester United fans have been reacting to UEFA’s decision to play ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ over the tannoy at Old Trafford ahead of England Women’s Euro 2022 opener with Austria.

Just under 69,000 spectators created a raucous atmosphere during the match. The Lionesses will tour the country in their group games, playing at The Amex in Brighton on Monday against Norway before taking on Northern Ireland at St Mary’s in Southampton on July 15.

The squad features three United players; goalkeeper Mary Earps, forward Alessia Russo and striker Ella Toone. However, they and United fans in the ground would have been less than impressed to hear the anthem most associated with Liverpool ringing out around the Theatre of Dreams prior to kick-off.

‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is also played before Celtic games, as some online pointed out. Liverpool adopted the song as their main anthem in the 1960s on the back of Gerry And The Pacemakers’ 1959 cover of the Carousel musical song.

But United had sung it in 1958 shortly after the Munich air disaster, as detailed by the Manchester Evening Newshere. A number of Twitter users highlighted this...

@theWishyman80: Was played there way before Anfield.

@GregoryWood74: United used to sing it.

@davenicholls26: Sung there by United fans before Liverpool adopted it as theirs.

However, others were still not impressed and were displeased with UEFA’s decision to play the melody.

@DamienPearce4: Celtic’s song anyway.

@stuart_orman: Abandon game.

@kkopczyk: Glad I missed that one!

@PBilliu: Who gave them permission?

@R09715534: Sacrilege.

@MarkSaunders3: Disgraceful!
