Danny Cowley provides injury update on experienced Portsmouth player

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley has confirmed that Shaun Williams has suffered a fractured vertebrae and it’s too soon to know when he will return.

#Pompey midfielder Shaun Williams has fractured his L5 vertebrae.

It’s still too early to know exactly the full extent of the injury but the good news is that the fracture is stable.

The 35-year-old was forced off midway through the second half of the 2-1 defeat against Charlton last time out, and it became apparent at the end of the game that it was a serious issue as Williams left in a wheelchair to go to the hospital.

And, a further update was provided by reporter Andrew Moon after he spoke to Cowley today about the former Millwall man.

“Pompey midfielder Shaun Williams has fractured his L5 vertebrae. It’s still too early to know exactly the full extent of the injury but the good news is that the fracture is stable.”

Losing the midfielder for any period will be a blow for Cowley as the Irishman has played 26 times in League One this season and is an influential player in the side.

The defeat against the Addicks continued Pompey’s poor run of form and means they are now 12th in the table and 12 points away from the top six.

The verdict

This is not the news that Cowley needed because he is working with a small squad anyway so to lose an experienced player is obviously a setback.

The one pleasing aspect is that the fracture is stable but it’s still clearly a serious problem and it will be a case of waiting and seeing in terms of further developments.

In the meantime, Cowley will need to find a solution in the middle of the park as Williams will be missed.
