Dan Ashworth placed on Newcastle leave as Man United prepare to make appointment

Dan Ashworth has been handed leave by Newcastle as Manchester United close in on making him their new sporting director.

Newcastle confirmed that the 52-year-old, who expressed his desire to join the Red Devils, has stepped aside from his duties at St James' Park. The club's chief executive, Darren Eales shared: "We are naturally disappointed that Dan has chosen to leave, however our exciting journey doesn't stop and the process to recruit a new sporting director will begin immediately." Eales also added: "We thank Dan for his efforts at Newcastle United and we wish him and his family well for the future."

New Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly eyeing Ashworth, who has previously held the position of technical director at the Football Association, to spark a revamp in the team. While there hasn't been any official contact between the clubs, both parties are eager to resolve the issue quickly, following a week's worth of rumours.

Magpies coach Eddie Howe expressed worry over Ashworth potentially taking insider information with him which could greatly influence Newcastle's decision in letting him move onto a rival club. Manchester United might have to pay a lot of money if they want to sign their new player before the summer transfer window.
