Former Manchester United 'target' responds to Bayern Munich transfer question and other rumours

Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka says he remains concentrated on the current campaign instead of a potential exit from the club - less than a year on from speculation linking him with a switch to Manchester United.

During the summer of 2023, the world watched on wondering how Erik ten Hag would build upon the squad that achieved Champions League qualification during his maiden campaign in England. Ultimately two midfielders were added to the ranks - Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat.

At the same time the German champions appeared to be in some disarray. Manager Thomas Tuchel was piecing together his midfield with out-of-favour options in his squad - Goretzka one of them - whilst missing out on top transfer targets to other clubs and the September 1 deadline. In the end, the 29-year-old stayed put.

This, plus his vast experience of winning titles both domestically and on the continent, is why the midfielder was touted as a potential addition for the Red Devils.

Since then, the Bavarian's struggles have evidently continued throughout the campaign as they are on course to lose the title to unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen barring a late-season miracle. They may be in the hat for the Champions League quarter-finals, but Tuchel is known to be on his way out of his job at the season's end, and there is potential for a major overhaul at the Allianz Arena.

Asked by Sky Germany via Fabrizio Romano on Saturday if this summer was the correct moment to call time on a six-year spell at Bayern, Goretzka had a clear response.
