Carlos Borges looks to future as he claims hat-trick in Man City U21 masterclass vs Derby

Manchester City youngster Carlos Borges believes that matches in the Papa John's Trophy will only help him as he looks to continue his development.

Borges was on top form on Tuesday night as the Blues' U21s beat Derby County 3-1 at Pride Park. The 18-year-old, who arrived from Sporting back in 2014, gave City the lead with a smart finish when put through one-on-one with Scott Loach in the Rams' goal.

David McGoldrick equalised just over ten minutes later with a tap-in from a corner. However, the Blues regained the lead in controversial fashion as referee Tom Nield allowed play to continue while Derby striker James Collins was down in a heap.

City's teenage star Borges took full advantage though, rounding Loach with ease to tap home his second of the evening. The three points were secured in stoppage time as the winger looked to have secured his hat-trick only for the deflected effort to officially go down as a Craig Forsyth own goal.

Speaking to MEN Sport post-match, Borges was quick to claim that the hat-trick was completed. "For sure, it was a hat-trick indeed," he beamed pitchside in Derbyshire.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game, a tough challenge but we were ready for it. The gaffer told us that it was going to be a tough game so we prepared ourselves for this game as it was an important one that we knew we had to win if we wanted to get through so we came here and we did that.
