Manchester United fans left furious after Cristiano Ronaldo denied 'clear goal' vs Newcastle

Several Manchester United supporters felt Cristiano Ronaldo was denied a legitimate goal less than five minutes into the start of the second half of Sunday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

After a dire first-half showing from Erik ten Hag's side, in which they were lucky to head back to the dressing room with the scores still level at 0-0, they thought they had got their noses in front just three minutes after the restart. Newcastle were awarded a free-kick just outside their own penalty area and Ronaldo thought the visitors had taken it quickly when it was rolled back to goalkeeper Nick Pope.

He robbed the ball from the toes of Pope, ran into the penalty area and rolled the ball into an unguarded net. However, the Portuguese star was quickly denied what he thought was the 701st goal of his club career by referee Craig Pawson.

Ronaldo was under the impression that Newcastle had taken the free-kick quickly and felt he was within his right to take the ball away from Pope, although it was soon deemed that it had not been taken. The United star, who was starting for just the second time in the Premier League this season, was furious with the decision and was booked for his protests.

United's supporters, however, backed Ronaldo, also sharing the opinion that the goal ought to have been given. Below, MEN Sport has taken a close look at what they had to say on social media.
