Chelsea have done the new Manchester United a huge favour

If there is one complaint about Manchester United's opening victory against Fulham it is that this week has been so quiet.

Facundo Pellistri is going and so is Will Fish but they are small-fry. Hannibal Mejbri, another peripheral squad member, could go.

There have been no leaks. And none from the Old Trafford roof, despite more rainfall. This week is manna of heaven for United and, even for journalists on the patch, the tranquility is welcomed. There were monthly crises last season and 19 defeats to dissect.

United are synonymous with drama and their two games have had some of it. The three goals scored came in minutes 82, 89 and 87.

Such was the positivity surrounding the victory over Fulham it ensured this week would be an uneventful one, barring earth-shattering news. And so another club has had to fill the crisis-club void.

Chelsea have been English football's basket-case club since Russia's barbaric invasion of Ukraine caused the defenestration of Roman Abramovich. The takeover of the club by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali has been a worse advert for American soccer than Diana Ross's penalty miss.

Someone who worked at Chelsea knew within three weeks of joining the club they had made a mistake. Staff are affronted by the treatment of boyhood fan and academy graduate Conor Gallagher. A source who represents another outgoing player has branded the handling of him "disgusting".

Third parties who act on the club's behalf "constantly laugh at the instructions they get". An agency source described Boehly as an "amateur" two years ago and he is worse now.
