Cambuslang Rangers boss hails comeback as they recover to rock St Roch's

Boss Paul McColl praised his Cambuslang Rangers side for recovering from a rocky start to rout rivals St Roch’s on Saturday.

The Somervell Park side fell behind after just three minutes when trialist Jason Clark had a moment to forget, heading into his own net, but a Jordan Shelvey double in the space of three minutes midway through the half saw them turn the game on its head.

An own goal from the visitors in first half stoppage time gave Camby a 3-1 lead at the break, before striker Zak Caldwell struck during the second half to make sure of the points in the West of Scotland First Division clash.

McColl said: “It’s a good result for us in what was a bit of a derby game.

“We had a really bad start. We nearly conceded within 30 seconds and then our boy headed it into his own goal.

“He’s turned it in from three or four yards. He’s tried to head it away and somehow put it into the net instead.

“I don’t think he could do it again if he tried, but we recovered well from that and put in a good performance after it.

“We were 3-1 up by half-time and then we got the job done in the second half.

“To be fair to St Roch’s, they did well in the second half and caused us problems before we got the goal to kill the game.

“It’s a good result because St Roch’s had a good result the week before, beating Blantyre 3-1, so we are pleased to get through it because there are no easy games in this league.”

The result maintains Camby’s unbeaten start to the season after three games, following a 0-0 draw with Thorniewood last midweek and a 2-2 draw with Kilwinning Rangers on July 29.

They now sit on five points from a possible nine and are seventh in the table, level with local rivals Rutherglen Glencairn.
