But the Northern Irishman is experienced enough to know when he’s got away with one. And smart enough to spot the warning signs flashing at him from the other end of the A90. So despite chalking up a second straight win back in the Scottish top flight with a hard earned 3-1 victory in the north east, Rodgers will have made the long journey down the road with plenty over which to muse.

For a start, he may wonder how it could be that his defence took it in turns to go missing in action at Pittodrie at various moments in a match which was a great deal more competitive and finely balanced than the final scoreline suggests. And he’ll want to know too the full extent of the injury which deprived him of Cameron Carter-Vickers for the second 45 minutes, after the big American rock limped onto the treatment table during the half-time interval.

Because if Carter-Vickers is carrying a niggling, hamstring issue which might put his future participation at risk, then the inadequacies which punctuated yesterday’s performance will be even more difficult for the manager to eradicate.

Also, Rodgers might be concerned that some of his players are struggling to fully understand exactly what it is he is trying to implement to a squad and playing style that Ange Postecoglou put together from scratch. Of course, Celtic’s first-team group at the start of next month is likely to include a few more fresh faces who will trouble the starting line-up.
