BREAKING: Main Manchester road shut as police called to incident - latest updates

A busy road in Ardwick has been closed in both directions following reports of a 'police incident'. Motorists have been told to avoid the A57 Hyde Road after a incident occurred at the junction of Devonshire Street North and Bennett Street.

Pictures of the scene show heavy traffic in the area and Stagecoach buses 201,202,203 and 205 making diversions.

Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted: "A57 Hyde Road, Ardwick. Road is closed at the junction of Bennet Street due to a police incident. Use Devonshire Street, Ashton Old Road/Stockport Road."

Stagecoach Manchester and Wigan tweeted: "Routes 201/202/203/205. Diversions in both directions via London Road, Fairfield Street, Ashton Old Road, Pottery Lane to resume service on Hyde Road. Stops on Downing Street and Hyde Road (to Pottery Lane) will not be served. Due to police incident."

Traffic monitoring service Inrix says: "A57 Hyde Road in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to police incident from A665 Devonshire Street North to Bennett Street. Congestion to A665 Devonshire Street and A6 Stockport Road as traffic diverts."
