Bradley Dack’s reaction to Gillingham’s 2-1 home defeat against Bristol Rovers and his desire to help put things right under Gareth Ainsworth
Bradley Dack has backed manager Gareth Ainsworth to turn things around at Gillingham and wants to be there when he does.
Dack was left questioning his team-mates’ character, passion and desire after another feeble performance at home, losing 2-1 to Bristol Rovers, following a second-half fightback from the visitors.
The experienced midfielder has been a standout player in another forgettable season, but like many, he will be out of contract this summer.
In a damning assessment after their latest setback, Dack was as honest as he could be when answering questions as to where it had gone wrong for the Gills again this season.
He said: “I think we have to start questioning each other in the football team, questioning each other's character, passion, desire, heart and whether we want to win enough - all the things that make a successful team. At the minute, we don't have that.
“Everyone needs to look at themselves in the mirror and ask that question of themselves. If they don't, then more fool them. They won't be in the game very long.”
Ainsworth’s been in the job for a year, leading the team to a club-record 21-game unbeaten run and taking the Gills top of the table in mid-September.
Since then, the Gills have had a woeful run of form, grateful to that early season form to keep them clear of trouble at the bottom of the table.
The manager insists he will put it right in the summer.
Dack said: “[The manager has] always said it's a two-year plan. I know he would have liked to have been more successful this season, 100 per cent, like we all would have but I think he needs time.
“Obviously, the club's had a track record of sackings and going through managers.
