Reaction from Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth after a goalless League Two draw away against Salford City
Gillingham’s goalless draw at Salford City gave manager Gareth Ainsworth another boost as he plans ahead for next season.
The Gills boss is keen to pick sides with next season in mind, while remaining competitive, and after a few tweaks at half-time, his side gave Salford a run for their money.
It was a thrilling finish to the game that saw Glenn Morris make a double save to deny Salford a late winner before Gills striker Seb Palmer-Holulden put a great chance over the bar with the last kick.
“I thought from the first minute of the second half we were a better side,” said the Gills manager.
“We played well. We were a good threat going forward. We're away at Salford who are going for automatic promotion. That, for me, puts us in good stead for next season.
“I want to make additions and make us better but also, I've got a good core here as well and that was a real good shift from some players, running and sprinting at the end, that's what I want. That's what you've got to be for a professional footballer. They all went to the well for me.”
Salford had won their previous five home games before the Gills put an end to that sequence.
“That's great,” Ainsworth said. “I just have to keep this demeanour about me all the time, no matter how it's going. It can go badly sometimes and everyone's booing and blaming you and having a go. That's quite a distant memory now, but not for me.
“I understand how frustrated fans are. I understand what they want. But I also understand that football goes like a roller coaster sometimes.
“I know the reasons why we weren't great. I know the reasons why we are decent now. That was a really good [Salford] side.
“We have to pat ourselves on the back and say, ‘Well done’ after getting a point against
