'Baffled' Wishaw boss fumes over disallowed 'goals' in Maryhill draw

Martin O’Neill insists his rock bottom Wishaw side had two perfectly good goals ruled out in their 2-2 draw with Maryhill.

The baffled Beltane Park boss saw a first-half free kick cross the line by “two yards”, but referee Lauren Whitehead refused to give the goal.

And O’Neill was further incensed when Euan McLew headed home in the 93rd minute, only for the official to blow for a foul on the goalkeeper after the ball had hit the back of the net.

A win would have taken Wishaw off the bottom of the West of Scotland Fourth Division and they are now nine points from safety. Goals from Liam Gormley and Andy Lindsay had Wishaw 2-1 up at half-time before Maryhill levelled in the 70th minute with a deflected strike.

And O’Neill said: “I don’t like criticising referees because it is hard enough operating at this level with no assistant referees at the side, but we’ve had two goals ruled out.

“We scored a goal in the first half that was two yards over the line and wasn’t given. It was direct from a free-kick, smashed it in off the bar, and it was in by about two yards, but the referee Lauren Whitehead – who had a good game outside of those two decisions – said she couldn’t see because she was too far away from the goal-line.

“But I’ve got no idea whatsoever how she has chalked the goal off at the end.

“It was a lovely ball into the box and our centre-half Euan McLew rose really well and bulleted a header in from three yards out.

“He stumbled into the goalkeeper after it but the ball was already in the back of the net.

“She gave a foul on the goalkeeper after the ball had gone in the net – it was bizarre.

“At that point, it feels like a defeat.
