Aston Villa warned over Luis Suarez transfer as Steven Gerrard eyes Liverpool reunion

Aston Villa supporters must understand Luis Suarez is not the same player who left Liverpool.

That’s the verdict of Jose Enrique, who played alongside the Uruguayan superstar during his Anfield days. Enrique also starred in the same Liverpool team as Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho and believes Suarez could bring ‘something special’ to Villa Park.

The striker has just left Atletico Madrid at the end of his two-year contract and Villa are among the clubs interested in signing him on a free transfer. Suarez has signalled his intention to stay in Europe this summer.

But Enrique has warned Villans that they won’t be getting Suarez at his peak if he does opt to reunite with Gerrard and Coutinho. Suarez, now 35, scored 11 goals in 35 La Liga matches for Atletico last season.

“Suarez is the best player I ever played with and what I saw him do on the pitch, I’ve never seen anyone else do,” Enrique told Genting. "What people don’t realise is that his age is not the same. He’s still a finisher and Stevie might want him as he’ll be a free agent.

“He wants to stay in Europe even though he has offers from Mexico and America. I know he has a special relationship with Stevie and I think he could bring something special to Aston Villa as he’s a proper finisher, but people must understand he’s not the player who left Liverpool.

“Stevie will want him too as he’ll have Coutinho there and they’ll both give you goals. He can probably still get you 15 to 20 goals a season.”
