Anthony Gordon pitched Scotland Euro 2024 'sod it' scenario as Chris Sutton flags up England obstacles

Chris Sutton has told Anthony Gordon that his path to playing at Euro 2024 is clearer with Scotland than England.

The Newcastle star is the latest player plying his trade at St James' Park to become the subject of an international tug of war between the Auld Enemies. Team-mate Elliot Anderson got a taste of training under Steve Clarke and decided that for now, it wasn't for him, although the door remains open. Harvey Barnes may also have been called up but for a toe injury that will keep him out until after the New Year. Tino Livramento is another who is eligible to pull on the dark blue, but the England Under 21 international also has Portugal and Italy as potential options.

But Record Sport columnist Sutton can see why Scotland might appeal to Gordon given the position he plays and who else can't get into gareth Southgate's squad right now.He told the It's All Kicking Off podcast: "The fact Anthony Gordon's played for England Under 21s is a big deal. But the longer he goes - and the position which he plays in is a really competitive position, normally off the left-hand side for Newcastle, but you've got Raheem Sterling, for example, [who] can't get in the squad.

"Would we think at this moment in time he is ahead of Anthony Gordon in the pecking order? Yes, we would. So as the years go on, then of course, Anthony Gordon will have thinking to do. From his perspective, it must be about him seeing himself progress in the near future with England. Otherwise, why wouldn't he want to go and play for Scotland in a major tournament?
