Lee Congerton under shock Manchester United consideration as former Celtic talent spotter 'in mix' for top job

Incoming Manchester United game–changer Sir Jim Ratcliffe has former Celtic transfer guru Lee Congerton under consideration for his major Old Trafford revamp – according to a report.

The English billionaire will take a 25 per cent stake in the Old Trafford club and lead the football side with the controversial Glazers remaining in charge. And Ratcliffe is on the hunt for a director of football to reinvigorate one of the biggest clubs in the world. A host of signing specialists have been linked and now Congerton – who currently serves as Atlanta's head of senior recruitment – is on their wanted list.

Congerton enjoyed a close bond with Brendan Rodgers but he copped flak from Celtic supporters in his role as head of recruitment. It came amid a lack of box office arrivals to build on the Irishman's stunning Invincible Treble triumph during his first season at the Parkhead helm. The Welshman reunited with Rodgers at Leicester City before he earned the chance with the progressive Serie A side.

The Telegraph state Ratcliffe will lean on Sir Alex Ferguson for his counsel with Crystal Palace's Dougie Freedman the leading candidate and Milan icon Paolo Maldini another in the frame.

Boss Erik Ten Hag has endured a tumultuous seconds season in the Old Trafford hotseat but it's understood the Dutchman retains the backing of senior figures at United and will be backed to ride the storm which has them off the pace in the Premier League and needing snookers to exit their Champions League group.
