Ange Postecoglou to Chelsea pitched as Celtic boss named wildcard next boss contender by Danny Murphy

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has been touted as a potential next Chelsea boss by pundit Danny Murphy following the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

Postecoglou arrived at Celtic Park as a virtual unknown in British football last summer despite leading Australia to the World Cup and enjoying success in the A-League and J-League. However, he has enjoyed a rapid rise to the top of the Scottish Premiership. The Australian lifted the league title as well as the Premier Sports Cup in his debut campaign, and led Celtic back to the Champions League group stage with his attacking style of play implemented against Real Madrid earning plaudits.

That has led to former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Murphy naming the Australian as a surprise candidate to become the next manager at Stamford Bridge. Former Borussia Dortmund and Paris St-Germain Tuchel has been axed by Chelsea after 20 months in the hotseat, with defeat to Dinamo Zagreb proving to be the final straw for owner Todd Boehly.

When asked who should be "top of the list of next managerial candidates" by talkSPORT host Jim White, Murphy blurted out: "Postecoglou!" However, fellow pundit Simon Jordan wasn't having the Celtic boss as a serious contender. The former Crystal Palace owner said: "Well, that is a huge step up again. The question for me is for me that I wouldn't have been sacking Tuchel unless there was a really, really compelling reason that we are not aware of."

Despite the prediction from Murphy, the early frontrunners for the Chelsea job will be more familiar to fans of the English Premier League. Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and Brighton gaffer Graham Potter have been tipped as early frontrunners.
