Daizen Maeda in Celtic injury sweat as Japan striker misses training amid mounting Ange Postecoglou fitness fears

Celtic striker Daizen Maeda is an injury doubt for Japan's clash with Ecuador after picking up a knock in the win over the United States.

The Samurai Blue are preparing for their final World Cup warm-up fixture on Tuesday against the South American side, and Maeda would have been expected to start having been given the nod by boss Hajime Moriyasu ahead of Parkhead teammate Kyogo Furuhashi in the 2-0 win over America in Dussedorf. However, he was replaced at half time during the clash with Moriyasu stating the Celtic star had felt a pain in his right leg.

The 24-year-old has missed the final training session ahead of facing Ecuador, with the Japan Football Association stating Maeda remained at the team hotel with a thigh injury. Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou will be closely monitoring the situation with a return to Scottish Premiership and Champions League action just around the corner.

It has been a bruising international break for the Scottish champions so fa with David Turnbull pulling out of the Scotland squad to return to Celtic for treatment. Giorgos Giakoumakis is also a doubt for Greece's Nations League clash with Northern Ireland with a thigh injury and has been assigned a "personal programme" by Gus Poyet.

Maeda has been a regular under Postecoglou so far this term, mainly being deployed as a winger. Celtic are back in action against Motherwell on Saturday, before the crucial group stage showdown with RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
