Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel: Gary Neville’s prediction from January 2021 was spot on

Chelsea stunned the football world on Wednesday morning by sacking manager Thomas Tuchel.

Following his 100th game in charge of the Blues, the revered German coach was fired by Chelsea’s board.

Tuchel was less than impressed after watching his side slump to a 1-0 defeat away at Dinamo Zagreb in their opening match of the Champions League group stages.

A disagreement over a last-minute free-kick between Hakim Ziyech and Reece James was the latest in a growing list of incidents which suggests all is not well in the Chelsea dressing room.

Per The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Chelsea planned to sack Tuchel regardless of the result against Dinamo Zagreb.

He added in a tweet that Chelsea hope to appoint a replacement before their next match against Fulham on Saturday, although there is ‘nobody waiting in the wings’ as things stand.

According to talkSPORT, Brighton manager Graham Potter is Chelsea’s top target to replace Tuchel, although the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane are also likely to be in the frame.

Tuchel has been sacked less than two years after replacing Frank Lampard as Chelsea manager.

When it was announced that Tuchel had succeeded Lampard, Manchester United legend Gary Neville was asked to give his thoughts live on Sky Sports News.

Neville received some stick at the time after confidently stating that Chelsea would sack Tuchel within two years.

“If Tuchel comes in, he’ll be exposed to exactly the same rules as Frank and we’ll be talking about him being let go in the next 18 months to two years, I’m pretty sure of that,” the pundit said.

He was spot on, wasn’t he?
