Andre Onana proved Pep Guardiola comments were right in Manchester United derby defeat
Manchester United were second-best as they were beaten 3-1 by Man City in the second Manchester derby clash of the campaign on Sunday afternoon.
Marcus Rashford scored a screamer to give United an unlikely lead at the break before a Phil Foden brace and a cool finish from Erling Haaland secured a well-deserved victory for the home side.
It means Erik ten Hag's side have now suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, a run of results that has left their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League hanging by a thread.
PLAYER RATINGS: How the United players rated in City defeat
MATCH REACTION: Roy Keane gives verdict on Ten Hag's future
Hojlund and Martinez not involved
It looked like Ten Hag had played the ultimate bluff when Rasmus Hojlund and Lisandro Martinez were both pictured arriving with the squad at the Etihad Stadium. It was short-lived excitement, with neither of them involved in the matchday squad at all and merely in attendance as a show of support for their teammates.
Pep Guardiola was never going to alter his selection regardless of who United had available, but the sight of Hojlund and Martinez arriving would certainly have raised questions if he were made aware of it.
What it does hopefully tell us is that the key duo are certainly edging ever closer to their respective returns to action. They can't come soon enough.
False nine gives United false hope
United were always going to have to try something different in attack, and this time it was to use Bruno Fernandes as a false nine instead.
Ten Hag's side are still at their best as a counter-attacking side, and this was the ultimate embodiment of a team that knew they had no chance of beating City at their own game.
