Wayne Rooney makes prediction on Manchester United's Champions League hopes

Former striker Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United's inconsistency will prevent them from securing a top four finish this season.

United moved back to within eight points of the coveted Champions League places with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford scored first half penalties to secure a return to winning ways for Erik ten Hag's side after back-to-back league defeats.

Fourth-place Aston Villa horns with Tottenham Hotspur (who are fifth) at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon. So United had to secure maximum points to capitalise on the certainty of at least one of them dropping points. In an ideal world, United could do with that Villa versus Spurs game ending in a draw.

However, Rooney is not convinced United have got what it takes to secure a top four berth and the prize of Champions League qualification that comes with it.

Asked on TNT Sports if the amount of shots per 90 minutes that United are conceding is sustainable, Rooney said: "No, and I think that is what we've seen that throughout the season. I don't think Manchester United will make the top four because they'll have to win almost every game.

"They are a team which is very inconsistent and I can't see them winning every game. I think it is going to be very difficult.

"Today, I think they conceded 20-odd chances against them but there were no clear cut chances for Everton. But it is too many. It is too easy for teams to get opportunities against them."

The former United striker also shared concerns about the club's current midfield, adding:
