Ally McCoist in searingly honest Rangers confession as he demands better from team he loves AND Celtic

Expectant Ally McCoist wants better from Rangers and Celtic as he expects both to up their game this season.

The pundit was left miffed by their standards of both last season and branded the fierce rivals "average" but conceded Brendan Rodgers' side possessed an extra oomph as they stepped up to land a double and leave Philippe Clement reeling. Now the Belgian – in the midst of a major summer revamp – is itching to raise the standards which is something the Ibrox side's greatest ever striker is hoping comes to pass.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "That's the one thing (summer recruitment), a couple have come in, it looks like the goalkeeper is going to be the captain (Jack Butland could replace James Tavernier if he exits) next season. There has to be an improvement. I thought Celtic and Rangers were average last year. I really did. I thought Celtic were slightly better, obviously, but I didn't think the standard was particularly great. I would be very hopeful there would be improvement with the two of them."
