Super Jack Butland in woe as Rangers injury bug bites and Ajax A-listers flex their muscles – 3 talking points

A nightmare afternoon for Jack Butland saw Ajax run out winners over Rangers as injury woes reared their head once again for Philippe Clement.

Goals from Kian Fitz-Jim and Branco van den Boomen were enough to see off the Scottish Premiership side as they took advantage of ropey goalkeeping from the Ibrox No. 1. Tom Lawrence pulled a goal back in the tough test in the Netherlands - but defensive lapses proved costly for Clement's men as they slipped to their first defeat of the pre-season campaign.

Rangers were on the back-foot early on as Jordan Henderson's deep cross found the head of Chuba Akpom at the back post. Butland managed to react quickly and turn the powerful header around the post. But Butland couldn't keep Ajax out for long - and was in the midst of the controversy at the Sportpark Mulderssinge as the Dutch giants opened the scoring.

Former England international Henderson was quick off the mark to play in Kenneth Taylor with a free-kick. Jack Butland rushed off his line to deny the midfielder as he burst through on goal - and appeared to bundle over the Ajax man. But as they protested the potential penalty, Kian Fitz-Jim lashed the ball into the open goal from a tight angle.

But the Dutch side were not in front for long. Lawrence found the net with an inch-perfect free-kick on the edge of the box as he curled the ball around the box to beat Diant Ramaj.

Butland would be at fault as Ajax took the lead before the break. The goalkeeper attempted to dive on top of Van den Boomen's free-kick from distance - but the shot-stopper allowed the effort to squirm under him and nestle in the bottom corner.
