Alan Shearer explains how Manchester United fans impacted Crystal Palace result

Alan Shearer believes Crystal Palace will have expected the Manchester United fans to get on their team's backs should they start well at Old Trafford.

Palace were licking their wounds last week when the Reds beat them 3-0 in the Carabao Cup third round. However, it was a different story when the two sides met again in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Joachim Andersen scored the only goal of the match midway through the first half to give his team the three points and send them above United in the table. At the final whistle, boos rang out inside the Theatre of Dreams as supporters showed their disapproval with the result.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer claimed the visitors benefitted from the home fans' angst during the match. He explained: "It was no fluke [the result] by the way, they [Palace] deserved it because they defended heroically.

"I think it was [Joel] Ward, Andersen, [Marc] Guehi and [Tyrick] Mitchell who were absolutely fantastic. They chucked themselves in front of everything, they got men behind the ball and Andersen got the goal of course from the corner which was a hell of a finish.

"You can imagine him [Roy Hodgson] saying to his players: 'Go out for the first 20 minutes and frustrate Man United because this crowd will get on top of them,' and that is exactly what happened.

"Man United were really poor, ran out of ideas and couldn't get through that defence." The Reds have a chance to put things right on Tuesday night when they host Galatasaray in the Champions League.
