'Act now' flood warning in place and roads shut after Storm Henk - LIVE weather and travel updates

A flood warning is in place in Stockport and south Manchester this morning and a number of roads are shut after Storm Henk brought heavy rain to the region.

The 'act now' warning is in force for the River Mersey at Cheadle Wood and Ford Lane. According to the Environment Agency, river levels are expected to 'remain high' after torrential downpours last night.

The area covered by the warning includes the golf course, club house, footpaths at Didsbury, Ford Lane east of M60, Ford Cottage, properties on Manchester Road north of the M60, Cheadle Bridge, Cheadle Wood Farm, Parrswood School playing fields and The Waterside Hotel. The warning was last updated at 6pm yesterday.

Residents living near the Mersey in these areas should be prepared for flooding by moving important items upstairs and moving vehicles to higher ground. Three flood alerts - where residents should 'be prepared' - are also in place across Greater Manchester.

These are for the Lower River Irwell catchment including areas in Greater Manchester, the Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston and the River Bollin catchment, including Knutsford, Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Bollington.

A number of roads are also shut this morning due to flooding, according to traffic alert service Inrix. The A555 Manchester Airport link road is fully shut in both directions from the A523 to the A34.
