A48 Eastern Avenue shut in St Mellons due to police incident - latest updates

The A48 Eastern Avenue is shut in both directions at St Mellons due to a police incident.

The roundabout is closed, preventing traffic from accessing the dual carriageway.

The closure comes after police found a Volkswagen Tiguan containing five people reported missing after a night out on Friday.

Tragically three of them were found deceased, with the other two taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Sophie Russon, 20, Eve Smith, 21, and Darcy Ross, 21, who are all from Newport, were at the Muffler bar and club in Maesglas in Newport on Friday evening before friends believe they headed to Trecco Bay in Porthcawl with Shane Loughlin, 32, and Rafel Jeanne-Actie, 24.

The five had not been seen since the early hours of Saturday morning.

Traffic service Inrix said: "A48 Eastern Avenue in both directions closed due to police incident at A48(M) St Mellons. On the roundabout.

"The roundabout is closed, meaning traffic can't get to and from the A48 Eastern Avenue dual-carriageway."

Gwent Police said on Twitter at 4.35am on Monday morning: "Following enquiries to locate five people who were reported as missing, officers have found the car they were last seen in, in the St Mellons area of Cardiff. The VW Tiguan was recovered just after midnight on Monday 6 March.

"It’s believed the car was involved in a road traffic collision and came off the A48. Three of those who were reported missing have been found deceased, two have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
