'A special club' - Everton youngster posts farewell message to Sheffield Wednesday supporters

Centre-back Lewis Gibson has reflected on his injury-hit loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday. The 21-year-old has today posted on his Instagram account a farewell message to the League One club.

Gibson joined the Owls on a season-long loan from Premier League side Everton last summer. But the Durham-born player was restricted to just four starts and two substitute appearances across all competitions.

After recovering from injury, Gibson was an unused substitute in Wednesday's final day victory over Portsmouth. However, he was not included in the matchday squad in either leg of their League One play-off semi-final against Sunderland. The Owls missed out on an instant return to the Championship, losing 2-1 to the Black Cats in a two-legged affair.

Gibson, who has returned to Everton, posted on his social media page: "A special club which will be back where it belongs, I have no doubt...

"On a personal note, it has been such a tough year and I am gutted I wasn't able to help the team more to achieve what we set out to do. Everything happens for a reason. Thank you @swfcofficial."
