31 people appear in court after Ely riots in Cardiff - live updates
A total of 31 people are due to appear in court over two days charged with offences relating to riots in Ely, Cardiff. There was widespread disruption in the area on May 22, 2023, as crowds clashed with police after the death of two teenagers in the area.
Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and 15-year-old Harvey Evans were killed when their e-bike crashed in Ely in May last year. The boys' deaths sparked hours of violence and vandalism on May 22 as footage emerged of a police van following the two teenagers moments before the crash.
A group originally estimated to be around 150 people torched cars and threw makeshift missiles and fireworks at lines of police officers on Snowden Road and Stanway Road, yards from the site of the fatal crash.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation into the interaction between South Wales Police and two teenage boys before their deaths in Cardiff, is in its final stages. The watchdog is also completing a second investigation linked to the incident, which has centred around complaints raised by the families of Kyrees and Harvey.
