Ilkay Gundogan has refused to rule out signing for his boyhood club Galatasaray rather than hanging up his boots following a second spell with Manchester City.

Gundogan, 34, only signed a one-year contract when returning to the club from Barcelona this summer. However, there is an option to extend that deal by an additional year.

Despite growing up in Germany and previously being affiliated with Bochum, Borussia Dortmund, Nuremberg and, briefly, Schalke, the 24-time Turkish champions are his team and Gundogan comes from a family of Galatasaray supporters.

With his parents being born in Turkey, there would be an emotional element to playing there, if a deal eventually happens. When asked about ending his career, Gundogan kept the possibility of playing for Galatasaray alive - just weeks after heading back to City from the Camp Nou.
