Joe Root set an England record of 34 Test centuries when he reached three figures for the second time in the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's.

Root, who made 143 in the first innings to move level with the previous England record of 33 hundreds held by the retired Alastair Cook, went to a century on Saturday's third day when he cut Lahiru Kumara for the 10th four off 111 balls faced.

It meant Root surpassed his fellow former England captain's mark. It is Root's 145th Test compared to Cook's career tally of 161 matches.

He was last man out for 103 in England's second-innings total of 251 on the third day. Sri Lanka faced a mammoth target of 483 to level this three-match series at 1-1.

The Multan Test between India and Pakistan in 2004 is remembered for Virender Sehwag's swashbuckling 309 - the first time an Indian cricketer scored a Test triple-century. However, there was another incident from the Test match that went on to become one of the controversial moments of Indian cricket. With India batting on 675/5 and Sachin Tendulkar unbeaten on 194, skipper Rahul Dravid decided to declare the first innings. While the decision was taken by the Indian cricket team considering the match situation, it meant that Sachin was left stranded six runs away from his double century. Sachin was visibly disappointed with the decision and it was widely criticised by both fans and experts. Former India batter Aakash Chopra recently spoke about the incident and how Tendulkar was extremely "unhappy".
Team India youngster Dhruv Jurel has recalled the incident when England star batter Joe Root sledged him during the Ranchi Test earlier this year. Jurel made his Test debut for India during the five match series against England earlier this year. On his debut in the Rajkot Test, Jurel got out on 46 but was hailed by India captain Rohit Sharma for his temprament.  In the third Test in Ranchi, Jurel walked in to bat with India in a delicate position at 161/5, following a top-order collapse.
Legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar has said the business of bashing India has to be countered with aggression, citing the recent comments made on the possibility of Joe Root surpassing Sachin Tendulkar as the leading run-getter in men's Test cricket. In an episode of the Club Prairie Fire podcast, former England captain Michael Vaughan had said it's just a matter of time when Root becomes leading run-getter in Tests. At the same time, he added the BCCI will do everything possible in its power to ensure that the record stays with an Indian batter.
All eyes will be on Virat Kohli when Indian cricket team gets down to action against Bangladesh in a Test series, starting September 19. Kohli has already retired from T20Is and it means that fans will get to see the 35-year-old star in only two formats - Tests and ODIs. Comparisons have often been drawn between Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, though the former has always maintained that the latter is unmatchable. Kohli has 80 international tons and is second to Tendulkar (100) in terms of number of centuries.
England stalwart Joe Root - the man closest in-line to possibly beat Sachin Tendulkar's record of the most Test runs - made a witty remark to brush off his nation's recent loss to Sri Lanka in the final Test of the three-match series. Taking a reference from the world of music, Root compared the England cricket team to popular rock band Coldplay, stating that "Coldplay can't be No. 1 every week". After winning the first two Tests, England lost the final one by eight wickets.
Captain Ben Stokes will return to the England test side after missing this month's series victory against Sri Lanka, the country's cricket board (ECB) said on Tuesday after they announced a 17-member squad for October's tour of Pakistan.
