Mystified Michael Stewart admits he can't understand how some Rangers fans leapt to the defence of red card sinner Ianis Hagi.

The Romania international made his long-awaited return to the Ibrox first-team as he came off the bench against St Johnstone - but lasted just 35 minutes as he was sent-off for a nasty-looking challenge on Benjamin Kimpioka.

The lunge initially earned a booking for from referee David Dickinson but VAR would intervene and the man in the middle would upgrade the offence to a sending off after reviewing the incident at the pitchside monitor.

Despite going down to 10 men, Philippe Clement's side would hold on for the victory and keep the gap with joint Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic and Aberdeen at five points.
