‘You can lose’ – Paratici lifts lid on Tottenham’s ‘fight for big players’

Fabio Paratici has spoken out on Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer business as he believes it is important that they are in the “fight to sign big players”.

The 49-year-old spent eleven years as a sporting director at Juventus up until May 2021. In June, he was confirmed as Tottenham Hotspur’s new managing director of football.

Spurs signed the likes of Cristian Romero, Emerson Royal and Bryan Gil ahead of the 2021/22 season. Nuno Espirito Santo was also announced as their new manager.

The former Wolves boss was sacked in November after only 17 games in charge. He was quickly replaced by ex-Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

The Italian was insistent that Tottenham needed new recruits during the January transfer window.

Conte got his wish as Paratici raided his old club. They signed Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus on deadline day.

Paratici has acknowledged that sometimes Tottenham will “lose the race” to sign players they are interested in:

“The worst and strangest thing is not being in the race,” Paratici said (via BBC Sport).

“Sometimes you win, as what happened with (Cristian) Romero in the summer, and sometimes you can lose the race.”

“It’s normal for us to be in the middle of this kind of rumours and it’s also normal when you start the race and to fight to sign big players.

“We are a big club, there are 10-12 big clubs in the world, so it’s normal when you start to race or to fight to sign a big player. Of course, you have somebody [else] that deserves to sign this player too.”
