WRU EGM Live updates as vote held to decide Welsh rugby's future

Welsh rugby's day of destiny has arrived. At 11am this morning, clubs from throughout Wales will come together at the Princess Royal Theatre in Port Talbot to vote on radical governance changes.

The proposals to slash the number of elected members on the WRU board and increase the number of independently appointed people in positions of power, including the chair, are designed to modernise the way the sport is run and ensure the board is made up of people with the varied skillsets required to lead a £100million business. There is also an aspiration that at least five of the WRU board directors will be women going forward. There is currently just one, with the Union still reeling from the devastating accusations of sexism and misogyny it faced in a BBC Wales Investigates programme back at the end of January.

The vote result will be decisive in shaping Welsh rugby's future, with acting WRU chief Nigel Walker admitting he doesn't know what will happen if the plans are rejected. It's believed key sponsors such as Principality could even walk away, while Professional Rugby Board chair Malcolm Wall has suggested he would resign, with other independent WRU directors likely to consider departing.

To pass, the WRU needs 75% of clubs to vote yes.

In the WRU's Annual General Meeting last autumn, 64.5% of clubs voted in favour of introducing an independent chair but it was not enough to pass the motion. It is now a question of whether the Union has done enough to convince more clubs who may fear they will lose too much control if they back the plans.

The meeting is expected to last around an hour before a vote is taken and the result is revealed. You can follow it
