“Would be a very smart pick-up.” – Sheffield Wednesday set sights on Cardiff City man: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict‘ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Sheffield Wednesday are considering a summer move for Cardiff City’s Will Vaulks, as per a Tweet from Sheffield-based journalist Andy Giddings.

The Tweet states that Wednesday have held talks with Vaulks’ representatives but he does point out that wages could be a stumbling block.

Vaulks, who sees his Cardiff contract expire at the end of this month, arrived in South Wales from Rotherham United in 2019, featuring 117 times for the Bluebirds since.

A combative and intelligent midfielder, it remains to be seen what the immediate future holds for him…

Three of our writers here at FLW have shared their thoughts regarding Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in Vaulks…

Josh Cole

Although Wednesday are already able to call upon the services of the likes of George Byers, Barry Bannan and Dennis Adeniran, the arrival of Will Vaulks this summer could boost their chances of challenging for automatic promotion.

“Whereas a lack of consistency last season resulted in Vaulks recording a WhoScored match rating of 6.50 in the Championship, he could get back to his best if he drops down a division to represent the Owls.

“Signing Vaulks will also provide some cover for Wednesday as there is no guarantee that Massimo Luongo will extend his stay at Hillsborough past the summer.

“If the midfielder is able to hit the ground running later this year, he could end up becoming a key player for the Owls as they aim to secure a return to the second-tier.

I do think this is a good signing for Sheffield Wednesday.
