Women's Premier Division round-up: Shelbourne close gap as Sligo collect rare win

Shelbourne took advantage of a rain-affected programme to move within six points of leaders Peamount United at the top of the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division.

The wet weather saw the games between Cork City and Athlone Town, Treaty United and Galway United and Wexford Youths postponed with just two games making the cut.

DLR Waves, despite the name, were able to continue despite the downpour as they welcomed title-chasing Shelbourne to the UCD Bowl.

The visitors started brightly but found Waves’ goalkeeper Rugile Auskalnyte in solid form with Kerri Letmon and Megan Smyth-Lynch denied.

The breakthrough did come in the 35th minute though, and it was captain Pearl Slattery who put her side ahead as she converted Noelle Murray’s corner.

Auskalnyte continued to frustrate Shels with a series of second-half saves, but they did get their second when Leah Doyle found Letmon and the latter scored.

Sligo Rovers picked up only their second league win of the season, and they did it in convincing fashion too as they had a 4-1 home win against Bohemians.

It was a case of a sister act for their first in the fifth minute as Jodie Loughrey’s first-time cross was eventually turned home by sister Keri after hesitation in the Bohs’ defence.

Steve Feeney’s side doubled their advantage in fortuitous circumstances on the half-hour as Sarah Kiernan’s corner went all the way to the net.

Lynn Craven 's long-range effort gave Bohs hope in the 67th minute, but they were soon extinguished by Paula McGrory who put Rovers 3-1 ahead with 11 minutes remaining.

The hosts even had time for a fourth with McGrory on target late on to complete a rare league win for Sligo.
