Woman suffers life-threatening injuries as she's knocked down near retail park

An elderly woman suffered life-threatening injuries after being knocked down by a vehicle near a retail park in Tameside.

The smash happened on Worthington Way, near the Crown Point retail park, at the junction with Ashton Road at around 1.30pm yesterday afternoon (Monday). Emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle.

The pedestrian - a woman aged in her 70s - was taken to hospital from the scene. Police said she suffered 'serious, life-threatening injuries'.

She remains in hospital for treatment. The driver remained on the scene to assist to officers.

No arrests have been made, Greater Manchester Police confirmed. Pictures from the scene on Monday showed a number of police vehicles in attendance and tape across one side of the carriageway.

A white van and white BMW were also pictured parked up at the roadside at a crossing and set of traffic lights. The pedestrian crossing in the centre was also cordoned off.

Officers at Greater Manchester's Serious Collision Investigation Unit are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward. They also want to speak to anyone who has CCTV, dash cam or mobile footage footage.
