Woman dies on M56 after police called to 'concern for welfare'

A woman has died on the M56 after police were called to 'concerns for her welfare'.

Officers were scrambled to the motorway near Manchester Airport at around 2.40am on Monday (July 31). The woman sadly died near the Thorley Lane bridge at junction five.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious, police said. Detectives are now working to identify her so her loved ones can be contacted.

They described her as being white and around 5ft 3in tall, with shoulder-length mousey brown hair that is straight and greying in places. Police believe her age to be between her 40s and 60s.

The woman was wearing pink nail varnish and dark clothing. She had pink and brown tortoise-shell glasses and a gold-coloured bracelet with a gold-coloured beaded clasp.

She was also wearing a gold-coloured ring with a knot design on her right ring finger. The woman wore another gold-coloured ring on her left ring finger which had a set of clear stones on, and a gold-coloured chain around her neck.

Officers also found a patterned, brown-coloured headband and a watch with a black leather strap. Anyone who has any information about the woman is being urged to get in touch.

Police are also asking anyone who has dash cam footage from the time of her death on the M56 to come forward. Detective Inspector Paul Costello of GMP’s Trafford district, said: "We are utilising all enquiries to ensure we find the woman’s next-of-kin, and we hope that a member of the public may be able to recognise her from the description given.

"I would ask anyone who may have information, no matter how little they think it is, to please get in touch with us."
