Wolves now 'expected' to complete deal for 101-game star at Molineux

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to win the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

It has been a slow transfer window for Bruno Lage at Molineux but momentum appears to be gathering ahead of the September 1 deadline.

The Guardian reported on Monday night that the West Midlands side had agreed a £38 million fee with Sporting for the signing of Nunes this summer.

If the transfer is completed, it would become a new club-record deal for Wolves, surpassing the £35 million spent on Fabio Silva a year ago.

Liverpool and Manchester City have had the attacking midfielder on their radars this summer but it seems Wolves are set to win the race, although personal terms are yet to be agreed. West Ham also had a bid rejected for the player.

Reports in Portugal, referenced by Empire Of The Kop, had previously stated that Nunes would be happy to wait for a move to Liverpool, with the 23-year-old eager to remain competing in the Champions League.

It will therefore be interesting to see whether or not Wolves will be able to convince him to agree to personal terms before the deadline.

The talkSPORT reporter now expects the deal to be completed, with the club’s strong Portuguese contingent likely to be decisive.

Lage hails from the country, as do a number of players. That is before even mentioning the connections with super-agent Jorge Mendes.

Crook told GIVEMESPORT: “Obviously, with Wolves, the advantage is they’ve already got a big Portuguese contingent, they’ve got a Portuguese manager and they’re close to a certain Portuguese super-agent. So I would expect this one to get done now I think.”
