Man Utd move for 146-goal star depends on Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford

Manchester United target Memphis Depay was ‘always viewed’ as an option if Cristiano Ronaldo departed the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

At one stage in the summer, it seemed certain that the 37-year-old would exit Old Trafford for the second time in his career, but his representatives have been unable to find a suitable buyer.

Back in July, Duncan Castles revealed that Ronaldo had asked the United hierarchy to sanction his sale if a suitable offer arrived as he was desperate to play in the Champions League.

Sky Sports recently reported that the Portugal international’s agent Jorge Mendes was offering his client’s services to Napoli, although a formal offer failed to materialise.

And David Ornstein of The Athletic also stated that Memphis was being closely monitored by the Red Devils as they assessed their options in case Ronaldo did get his wish and moved onto pastures new.

However, fellow Premier League side Chelsea may be set to snap the Barcelona forward up from under United’s nose in a last-minute deadline day deal.

Football Insider have disclosed that Memphis is ‘set to accept a one-year contract offer’ from the Blues after being deemed surplus to requirements in Catalonia by Xavi.

United have already added Antony to their forward line this summer after pulling off an £86 million deal, finally securing his signature following lengthy negotiations with Ajax.

Yet Jones has informed GiveMeSport that it is a ‘possibility’ Erik ten Hag’s charges move for Depay following Chelsea’s interest, although stated he was seen as a potential Ronaldo replacement.
